Interaction between National Dalit Commission and Tamankhola Rural Municipality: Improving Dalit Student’s Access to Quality Education

A preliminary study by Niti on Dalit issues indicated that Dalit students are being deprived of quality education in under-resourced community schools. In response to this finding, Niti organized a town hall meeting in Tamankhola Rural Municipality, a region with a significant Dalit population, a majority number of community schools, and poor Secondary Education Examination (SEE) performance. This event facilitated interaction among the National Dalit Commission, local government representatives, the School Management Committee, students, teachers, and local Dalit activists to collaboratively tackle the barriers Dalit students face in accessing the constitutionally guaranteed right to quality education.  It initiated a pathway for future interactions and discussions among stakeholders, ensuring continuous engagement and accountability in addressing the educational marginalization of Dalit students. Acknowledging the issue, Chairperson of the rural municipality during the event committed to introducing programs tailored to the needs of Dalit students in the next fiscal year.
